The Nexplanon contraceptive implant is now licensed for up to 5 years of use in the UK, extending its previous duration of 3 years.
This update follows revised guidance from the UK medicines regulator and is supported by strong clinical evidence showing that the implant remains safe and highly effective during years 4 and 5.
What does this mean for patients?
✅ Longer-lasting contraception without the need for replacement as often
✅ Fewer appointments and procedures
✅ Continued highly effective protection against pregnancy
✅ Greater convenience and flexibility
Is the implant still effective after 3 years?
Yes. Recent studies have shown that:
• No pregnancies were reported during years 4 and 5 of implant use
• No new safety concerns were identified
• The implant continued to provide reliable contraceptive protection throughout the extended period
